Lowell Wrestlers: All States to New Englands

By Ricky Pulido

Lowell, MA- The Lowell High School (LHS) Red Raiders qualified six wrestlers to compete in the New England Wrestling Tournament at the recent MIAA All-States on Feb. 27.

“Absolutely [these wrestlers] have all [the] technique down its just a matter of going out and shooting any match your going to go through,” said LHS Co-Coach Jimmy Dylan about the preparedness of his final six, who earned four places at the MIAA All-State Wrestling Tournament held at Salem High School in Salem, MA.

Red Raiders, Brandon Sao, Ricky Pulido, Casey Abshire, Malik Settles, fought to compete at the New England Interscholastic Wrestling Tournament on March 10 in North Andover, MA.  Julio Escota, (138), and Leam Grenem, (152) are alternates for the Red Raiders in the postseason.

Sao captured high honors for the Red Raiders at the All States with a 4th place finish in the 160 lb. class.  Meanwhile, Ricky Pulido, (106, 2-2), Casey Abshire, (113, 2-2), and Malik Settles, (182,1-2), each placed sixth in their respective weight classes to earn entry in the New Englands.

“[They are] prepared to grind through a six minute match…its not going to be harder than anything we’ve done…everyday. You should be battle tested and ready to go,” Dylan further commented about postseason readiness.

Wrestling builds strength and endurance but also character, according to Dylan who works with renowned Coach George Bossi to develop the physical and the mental strengths of his team.  Dylan tries to incorporate the LHS core values of responsibility, integrity, determination, engagement and respect throughout the season.

“Commit.  Commit to anything you do that is worth doing.  You need to fully commit yourself to it.  [It’s] like a shot [a takedown in wrestling]. Like your grades or anything like that, if you want it then you’ve got to fully commit yourself to it,” he said with encouragement.
