Heart of Glass

Erin Shetler

What if hearts actually broke

It would no longer be a funny joke

It wouldn’t instantly shatter into a million pieces

The amount of shards just increases

At one point there are too many cracks

When you can no longer relax

If you knew the effect you had

Would you still be mean and bad

You have to tiptoe around a heart of glass

To make sure that they don’t pass

Hate spreads more and more

Until it gets into your core

You can not get the hate out

And you begin to have more self doubt

When your smile slowly disappears

Not even noticed by your peers

If you knew the effect you had

Would you still be mean and bad

You have to tiptoe around a heart of glass

To make sure that they don’t pass

They say asking for help is so easy

‘The worse it can be is a little breezy’

But you just stay still and quiet

‘You’ll feel happier if you are on a diet’

They sound friendly and nice

But that doesn’t always suffice

If you knew the effect you had

Would you still be mean and bad

You have to tiptoe around a heart of glass

To make sure that they don’t pass

These are the last words that I will say

I hope you reach happiness one day

It may be a long long time from now

But when you get there you’ll just say ‘wow’

Don’t lose all your hope so fast

One day your struggles will be in the past

I wish I knew the effect I had

I’ll try never to be mean or bad

I’ll tiptoe around a heart of glass

And protect you so you don’t pass
