Icarus

Erin Shetler

New school, new faces, all through screens
You can’t go through this, especially as a teen
School gives you enough stress already
Even though we’ve just begun, you are already unsteady
‘Just do the work, don’t procrastinate.’
Don’t worry because more stress awaits
You soar higher and higher
Until your wings set on fire
Try not to overwork yourself
Like Icarus fatally did to himself

Not even a month in, and you are already in burnout
You want to quit, but you don’t want to be a dropout
Too many assignments, tests, and work to do
You wait and wait for your big breakthrough.
Your to-do list grows and grows
There are too many cons and not enough pros
You soar higher and higher
Until your wings set on fire
Try not to overwork yourself
Like Icarus fatally did to himself

The time comes when you finally break
It is a horrible feeling which you can not shake
Everything around you stressed you more and more
Your imaginary energy bar is on the floor
You want to cry, but there’s nothing there
Everything that you have to do is on a constant blare
You soar higher and higher
Until your wings set on fire
Try not to overwork yourself
Like Icarus fatally did to himself

‘Crazy’ doesn’t begin to describe this year
Nearly everyone is in constant fear
If you were to take something out of this
Try to live life with a wisp of bliss
You are trying your best, and that’s all people can ask
Just don’t forget to wear your mask
We all soar higher and higher
Until our wings set on fire
Try not to overwork yourself
Like Icarus fatally did to himself
