Too Old, Too Young

Erin Shetler

Being a teen is ever so hard
Its the part in life you want to disregard
You never thought it would be this difficult
Having to jump through hoops on an impossible catapult
People always warned you growing up
‘Teens are worse than kids and grownups’
‘Too old, ‘too young’, you hear it a lot
So many memories you’ve already forgot
You want to escape these six years
Good luck facing all your worst fears

Too old to do things like run outside and play
You remember when you had fun all-day
You are made fun of if you still play with toys
‘You can’t play with that, it’s only for boys’
And growing up with stereotypes
‘Can’t sing that note, it’s too high for your pipes’
‘Too old, ‘too young’, you hear it a lot
So many memories you’ve already forgot
You want to escape these six years
Good luck facing all your worst fears

Too young to do anything you want to do
Can’t drink, can’t drive, nothing for you
You learn about World Wars and balancing equations
And other things you would use on the rarest occasions
You still don’t know how to do taxes or balance checks
Too young to have to know, since they are so complex
‘Too old, ‘too young’, you hear it a lot
So many memories you’ve already forgot
You want to escape these six years
Good luck facing all your worst fears

Being a teen is by far the worst
Half of the time, we feel like we’re cursed
I’m not going to sugar coat anything I say
Because it feels like we are always the prey
“I can and I will,” someone once said
‘Only a few more years,’ I say in my head
‘Too old, ‘too young’, we all hear it a lot
So many memories we’ve already forgot
I’ll see you after these long six years
Where we all have to face our worst fears
