Didn’t Feel Like December

Erin Shetler

This December didn’t feel like December

There was no snowstorm

Where my brother would beg

For me to have a snowball fight

Or to go sledding with him

This December didn’t feel like December

There was no big family gathering

No little cousins running around

Asking me to play on the swing

Or build a rocket ship out of legos

This December didn’t feel like December

There were no frigid temperatures

The week before the holiday break

I wore a long sleeve shirt

And was not at all cold while outside

This December didn’t feel like December

There was no party on New Years Eve

No countdown as the ball drops

I watched on my phone, in my bed

Waiting for it to hit midnight

This December didn’t feel like December

I may be remembering the past incorrectly

But I am sure that growing up

It felt more authentic

Than it does now
