Steve Szecskas

Stephen Szecskas has worked at Lowell High School for seventeen years and 20 years overall. His favorite thing about the Lowell High School community is the diversity. Currently, Mr. Szecskas, or as his students call him, Mr. Z, teaches social studies and is one of the Lyceum teachers. He has earned a Master’s in Education but is not interested in getting further degrees, and he would be happy to be a teacher for the rest of his career. Besides Lowell High School, Mr. Szecskas has worked at Canton High School as a substitute and hockey coach, at All Saints Cathedral School (St. Thomas, USVI) as a teacher, and at Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida as a teacher and coach.

Mr. Szecskas grew up in Braintree, Massachusetts, with a younger brother, Danny. His favorite childhood memory was his first Bruins game. As Mr. Szecskas grew up, he became interested in the Hospitality industry, where he had his first job as a Prep Cook at a hotel restaurant. He worked in hospitality for ten years, gaining the title of general manager of the hotel where he had worked. At 30, Mr. Szecskas realized that he wanted to be a teacher. He had been a High School hockey and baseball coach before acquiring his first job as a teacher where he taught pre-algebra, grammar, economics, and psychology.

Throughout his life, Mr. Szecskas has lived in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Florida, and the USVI. He has traveled to four countries, although his favorite place he has traveled to is The Caribbean. In the future, he would like to go on a safari in Africa. He would love to move back to the islands when he retires, as many people can understand!

Mr. Szecskas enjoys hockey and doing anything Christmas-related in his spare time. Some of his favorites include his favorite TV show: Game of Thrones, the book: Illusions by Richard Bach, and the songs: Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen and Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey. When asked if he has played any instruments, he says he used to play piano, but his teacher quit on him. He does, however, wish that he had continued to learn. Mr. Szecskas’s biggest accomplishments are his two children, Haley and Maze. Besides his two children, he also has a yellow lab named Bella.
