Siri finally hit double digits this year on October 4, 2011, the Apple assistant we know and love was created, providing succor to the general population.  Adam Cheyer created the AI assistants we use every day, such as Siri. The ability to talk to our technology has advanced greatly over the past ten years. 

The first versions of Siri, believe it or not, started to develop back in 1993. These models became a 17-18 year proposal to vocalize our iPhones. Siri was first introduced to Apple buyers on the iPhone 4 back in 2011. The reactions of the public were extremely positive as a matter of fact; which greatly differs from the view of Siri now, in 2021. When it was first released, CNN stated that “it’s kind of like having the unpaid intern of [your] dreams at [your] beck and call.” It is rare to hear any praise of that level towards Siri in modern times. 

Siri has not lived up to the potential imagined by Cheyer. “Hey Siri, call dad”, leads to her calling someone you haven’t talked to in years. You could ask her something and get a completely unexpected, unrelated answer. The first years of Siri had everyone amazed, but now people think she’s listening to our conversations. Frustrated, this could make people turn to other AIs for assistance.   

Currently, in 2021, Siri now has multiple kinds of competition. Since 2011, companies have started to form their own versions of Siri. Another assistant we all recognize is Amazon’s Alexa, which was put out to the public in 2016. Jeff Bezos had the idea in early 2011 for the new Echo Dot to be entirely operated by voice. Another competitor of Siri is Google, which acts as an Android user’s Siri. On the whole, people started to take Siri less seriously. Consequently, the most asked question Siri receives is, “Siri, do you love me?”
