Lesson Learned by LHS Senior

By Chyanne Keo

Lowell, MA- Although Charly Rathanak Em, a Lowell High School student, does n’t remember much from his childhood, his most cherished memory is also his most embarrassing one.  It involved spilled milk.

As the saying goes, “Don’t cry over spilled milk.”  One day, Charly, as he is known by friends and family, had a great opportunity to put the saying to the test at a local Market Basket supermarket.

“I remember the day when I spilled multiple gallons of milk all over the floor while working my first job,” said Charly, who was 14 years  old at the time.  That day he learned that accidents do happen in life and not to overreact on those occasions.

Now an eighteen-year-old senior, Charly understands that it’s not the end of the world when everything does n’t go as planned.  It’s a life lesson he has taken with him.

While other seniors are stressing over college applications, grade point averages and first-choice schools, Charly describes this school year as not bad and actually relaxing and stress free.

Although Charly says his goal is to “just pass [his] classes this year,”  he does want to attend college and be successful too.  However, he does n’t really know what he wants to do for a career.

A highlight of the year has been his public speaking class which he thought would be a difficult adjustment for a shy person like himself.

“[Public Speaking] is a very enjoyable class,” said Charly with a surprised tone.  In fact Charly fit right in within a few days, he says.

Charly’s favorite color is black, not milk white, and his favorite class is now public speaking.  And on the days when public speaking does not go just right, he does n’t cry over spilled milk.
